traditional asian garb portrait in historic settingUndoubtedly, China has undergone dramatic changes over the past 30 years. In this blog, I’d like to briefly discuss and compare the history of two traditional outfits in China, cheongsam lingerie aka Hanfu and Qipao. The changes are extreme and can be discovered in many fields, for example, the changes in day to day clothing. Hanfu refers to the traditional historical dress of Chinese HAN people, which is still the major ethnic group of today’s China. When it reached the Shang dynasty, Hanfu has already popularly wore across the nation. According to existing documentary Hanfu was first developed by Huang Di (Yellow Empire), the first empire of China. Back then one person’s appearance can already tell what social status he held. The outfit was unisex and the colors of the Hanfu’s were merely basic primary colors like red, yellow, and blue. Historically, Han Clothing has influenced many of its neighbouring cultural costumes, hence, many Asian countries’ traditional costume were actually designed based on the concept of how Hanfu looked, for instance, Japanese Kimono, and the Vietnamnese áo tứ thân. Elements of Hanfu have also been influenced by neighbouring cultural costumes, especially by the nomadic peoples to the north, and Central Asian cultures to the west by way of the Silk Road. Many people today cannot distinguish the difference between Chinese Hanfu and Japanese Kimono. After thousand of years of wearing Hanfu, Chinese people were forced to shift to change their official clothing. It’s because Kimono is a development of Hanfu. One of the policies was to change their national costume, therefore, chinese traditional wedding clothes Qipao has become the official Chinese costume since the 17th century. Qing Dynasty when the Emperors were not race of Han, but the Manchuria, the federal government established lots of rules to prevent rebel from Han people. It covered all of a woman’s body except for her head, hands, and toes. The Qipao worn today are modeled after ones made in Shanghai in the 1920s. The modern qipao is a one-piece, formfitting, floor length dress that has a high slit on one or both sides. Traditionally, Qipao was very wide and baggy which is a one-piece dress featured a high neck and straight skirt. Modern variations may have bell sleeves or be sleeveless and are made out of a variety of fabrics. Although Qipao is not the original traditional costume of China, but it now has a significant role to play in World fashion as many Chinese movie star has worn Qipao to attend Oscars and other big events around thw world. Therefore, it is safe to say that Qipao is better know than Hanfu in the world.
